The course will present the state-of-the-art research including our own contribution. First, we introduce the formal ontology perspective and discuss how it relates to engineering needs. One prominent issue in this domain concerns the proper conceptualisation of the notion of functionality and its cognates. We give an indication of the vast domain of engineering models by selecting two major paradigms, known as Functional Representation and Functional Basis, which are presented to a fair level of detail. To these we add a different approach due to the Japanese school: Functions as Roles. In this way, the attendants will acquire a clear understanding of the specific nature of the problems raised by engineering studies and the alternative proposals. We will describe the main approaches to represent functionalities of technical devices via formal ontological means, this includes our own work.
